Vacation Day

I had the day off from work today and since Mackenzie didn’t have school I didn’t have to rush home to get her on the bus I had some extra time. I went to the Danvers Y this morning, and they open at 5:30 but the pool doesn’t open until 6:00. While I waited for the pool to open I headed down to the weight room and did some lifting. I think I need to head down there more often, I’m going to feel it tomorrow. Once the pool opened I did 3250 yards in about 50 minutes. I was the only one in the pool, I think because most people didn’t realize that St. John’s Prep is no longer using the pool until the fall. After the swim it was down to the treadmill, did I mention it was snowing out this morning? Anyway, did 5 miles on the treadmill and called it a day.

Friday Swim

You never know what kind of day you are going to get on a Friday at the pool. Sometimes it is kinda slow and people drift in and then there are days like today, when people are ready to go. I also got a reminder of just how slow of a swimmer I am today when one of the fastests swimmers in the area jumped into my lane half way through the workout. Now I know what a real swimmer looks like.

600 – warmup
400 – pull
300 – kick
– Main set 4 times –
200 on 3:30
200 – 100×2 on 1:30
200 – 50×4 on 45
2400
– Main set –
Total: 3700 yards

Monday Swim Session

Good morning in the pool. It felt a little short, but after the long ride yesterday that was ok. The pace was a little slower than normal because Mr. Speed was not in the other lane today. Although a young college grad did show up and put a hurting on most of us anyway. I can’t remember where they said she swam, but she was pretty fast and tough to keep up with.

500 – warmup
500 – 10×50
500 – 5×100 pull
300 – free
300 – 4×75 – stroke
300 – free
300 – 4×75 – stroke
300 – free
300 – kick
300 – cooldown
200 – under/overs
Total: 3500 yards

Good Friday Swim

It was a good morning in the pool today, everyone was in pretty early and ready to go. I think today was the first time that I actually finished the same amount of yards as everyone else kicking. Most of the time I get in about half of what everyone else is doing for kick, part of that is because they all have flippers on. I did most of the leading today in my lane, the pulls were tough, I didn’t slow anyone down in my lane, but keeping up with the lead guy in the next lane wasn’t going so well! Maybe I need to get paddles like everyone else for pulling?

500 warmup
500 4×125 pull
300 4×75 kick
500 25,50,75,100,100,75,50,25
600 3×200 pull
500 25,60,75,100,100,75,50,25
600 3×200 pull
200 cooldown (under/overs)
Total: 3700 yards

Superbowl hangover?

I’ve never seen so few people at the pool as this morning. Usually there is at least three or four per the two lanes that we use. Today there were three total for the first half hour! After the normal warmup, pull, kick we started doing 100 pull on 1:30 and that was giving me about 5 seconds rest. We made it through eight of them and Karen decided that was enough and by that time some other people showed up. Ended up doing another 1200. A little bit shorter than normal, but not too bad.

700 warmup
500 pull
200 kick
800 – 100×8 on 1:30 pull
600 – 150×2 75×4
600 – 150×2 75×4
Total: 3400

Lap Swim

Today was one of the easier swims. As I’ve said in the past it seems like friday is a lazy day at the pool. I did our standard warmup, pull, kick and was thinking are we ever going to start the main set today or am I just going to do laps. The first time through the main set we did free, so that was a pretty good workout. The next set they did stroke though, and since I just do free it was a bit easier for me. Maybe after Ironman I will start to become more proficient in the other strokes, but for now I’m sticking with free.

700 warmup
500 pull
200 kick
800 1×200 2×100 4×50 8×25
800 1×200 2×100 4×50 8×25
450 pull
500 cooldown
Total: 3950

Morning swim

Had a good swim workout at the pool this morning. The 500 hundred sets were tough, the first not too bad, but the next two were tough. The second and third were harder because I really pushed it on the 50 sprints. Even though we were doing the 50s on a minute I was getting them done right around 35 seconds. Unfortunately I’m not in good enough shape to recover from that and keep pace on the next 500. Oh well, it was fun doing the 50s hard.

500 warmup
500 pull
200 kick
500 5×100 on 1:30
200 4×50   on 1:00
500 5×100 on 1:45
200 4×50   on 1:00
500 5×100 on 1:30
200 4×50   on 1:00
500 cooldown
Total: 3800

Old School Training

This morning I got up and out for a bike ride down here in Englewood. I threw my Garmin on my Dad’s Peugeot. In it’s day it was a really nice bike, it is in rough shape now though. It has been through a couple of floods and in need of some work. I did a loop up to Manasota Beach and back, it was actually not that bad of a ride. I had a little head wind on the way up, but it was nice coming back. The bike held up over the 25 miles ok, no flats!!! The shifters are on the down tube, but since there are few hills I did little shifting. The pedals are just plain vanilla pedals, not even baskets. The handlebars need to be taped again, as of right now they have some foam cushion that is wearing off and got all over. The tires seemed to have water in them or are in serious need of truing. Oh yeah, no water bottle cage!! Here is the loop http://connect.garmin.com/activity/64548684.

I also did some swimming this afternoon, at the outdoor pool. I just did a straight 3000 yard swim in about 45 minutes, nothing fancy. It was pretty cold out but the water was 83 so it was nice in the water, but fridge getting out! There were only a couple of us in the pool and it ended up just being me at the end.

At the Pool

The swim workout was a good solid workout today. Dave was in my lane today, he doesn’t do flip turns, but he is pretty fast, especially his free. On the 300 he pulled away by almost 25 yards, luckily when I looked back the rest of the group in my lane was further back than me so I wasn’t holding anyone up. I can usually keep up for the first 100 yards but then start to fall back. I was still making it back to the wall with time to rest, but just not as fast as I would like to be.

500 warmup
400 pull
100 kick
200 4×50
—- Main Set 2X —-
300 1×300
300 2×150
300 4×75

The Friday Swim

I showed up at the pool a little early today and got in a few laps before the rest of the crew showed up. Not only was I early but it seemed like quite a few people were late. I ended up doing 800 warm up. Friday seems to be a lazy day in the pool. At least it was today as people drifted in and out of the workout and there seemed to be a lot more chatter in between sets. I can’t complain too much, after yesterdays CompuTrainer session I was plenty happy to just go with the flow today.

The workout:
800 warmup
400 pull
400 – 8×50 (The real swimmers do IM order, I just do free for everything)
600 – 12×50
750 – 3×100, 3×75, 3×50, 3×25
600 – 12×50
500 warmdown

Total: 4050

For some of the sets you are supposed to do other strokes, maybe someday I will start doing those, for now I just do free all the time.
