The Pond is warming up!

Headed to the Y this morning to swim, but was really wondering if George was going to show up with the latest temperature readings from the pond. George did not disappoint and said the water was 64 degrees on Sunday afternoon. That is plenty warm enough to swim, a bit surprising though I really would have thought the temp in the mid 50s. Looking forward to hopefully getting in this weekend.

Good swim morning

The Y was pretty empty at the start of the swim so I had about 1500 yards in before we started the workout. Then we did a few sets and another young woman showed up who is very fast. She really upped the intensity of the workout adding probably another 900 yards at the end and not at a slow pace either. Apparently she is getting ready for this swim http://www.bayswim.com/index.html.

Run and Swim

Changed things up a little bit today. Instead of going and swimming at the Andover Y at 5:30 I went down to the Danvers Y early and did a quick 5 mile run before swimming. It’s hard to get a run in when I go to the Andover Y because I would have to get up much earlier or run later, neither of which is very appealing. I still need to get to the Y just a little bit earlier as I ran out of time swimming and only managed to get in 2500 yards.

Swim and Bike (long and short)

Long day today, but a fun day. Started out with an easy 3000 in the pool. Just a straight forward swim alternating pulling and free every 500 yards. Just about 45 minutes to do the swim and felt pretty good.

Then it was off to bike at 10am. Wasn’t really sure how far we were going to be going and didn’t have any idea of the route, just wanted to make sure I wasn’t dropped. Before the ride even really got going I had 10 miles in so I knew I was going to be racking up some miles so I just stay in the middle of the pack for most of the ride. Once and a while my buddy Mike was dropped on the hills so I’d wait to make sure he knew which way we were headed. Took a little bit of work to catch up to the group after that, but they would wait up once they realized we were off the back. The best part of the ride was stopping at Abe’s in Newburyport for a bagel. Too bad I can’t do that in the Ironman!! We ended up getting in a little over 50 miles.

Then a couple hours after that Julie wanted to ride. My legs were feeling a litte tired by the time she showed up. Starting out was tough, but my legs actually loosened up about 5 miles into the ride. It was a short ride though, more like a time trial. We did 19.1 mph, so felt good about that.

Conflicting water temp reports

You know it’s getting close to pond season when everyone shows up to the pool reporting the water temp. This morning there were reports of 45 degrees and 48 degrees. Still a little too chilly. It also seems like most of the pond swimmers are becoming more steady in the morning to get ready for pond season. Most of the year they were hardly ever showing up and now they are showing up on a consistent basis, guess no one wants to be left behind crossing the pond.

Getting closer to pond season!

Pretty good swim this morning, but more importantly we are getting closer to getting back in the pond. George stopped by with the official horse thermometer and took a reading of 48 degrees. I’m thinking maybe 6 or 7 more degrees and we’ll be good to go!

Late, short and fast

Forgot to set the alarm for this morning, so I woke up and it was already 5:20. At that point I’m usually just getting ready to hit the water. Instead of showing up late and having to kill myself to keep up without a warmup I decided to go to the Danvers Y for a bit of an easier swim. My legs are feeling pretty sore this morning from the Half-Marathon yesterday. I felt fine yesterday after the race, but can definitely feel it this morning, must have been all those hills yesterdady.

I jumped in the pool and started out easy but quickly picked up speed because I felt pretty good in the water. I ended up doing 2000 yards in 30 minutes, pretty good pace. Not the normal distance or time spent in the pool, but better than nothing when you forget to set the alarm!

Swimming and race weight

This morning was a pretty easy swim, most showed up late so I had about 1500 yards in before we actually started the workout. Jan was in the pool today so there was no messing around once the workout actually started.

500 – warmup
500 – pull
500 – swim,pull
1000 – 2 x 200 (pull), 3 x 100, 4 x 75 (kick)
1000 – 2 x 200 (free,stroke), 3 x 100, 4 x 75
Total: 3500 yards

My weight has been slowly dropping, still have a ways to go before I’m where I want to be though. I saw a quote the other day that I thought was pretty funny, but seems true.

“The trick is to keep losing weight until your friends and family ask if you’ve been sick. Then you know you’re within 10 lbs. If they start whispering to each other, wondering if you’ve got cancer or aids, you’re within 5lbs. When they actually do an intervention, you’re at race weight.” – Slowman

I thought it was pretty funny, because usually at some point as a train people start asking me “You’re not going to lose any more weight are you?” I guess that means I have been within 10 lbs of race weight.
